Nursing is a self-regulated profession governed through the College. A nurse is responsible for practicing in accordance with the standards of the profession, and for keeping current and competent throughout his/her nursing career (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2009).
• Current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario required
• Advance education in Perinatal care (Obstetrical triage, labour & delivery, intrapartum, post-partum) required
• Advanced education in Paediatric care preferred
• Advanced education in Level II Nursery preferred
• Certification in Fundamentals of Fetal Health Surveillance preferred
• Current NRP certification with current experience required
• Current Paediatric advanced life support (PALS) preferred
• Current Paediatric Evaluation assessment Response and Stabilization Certification (PEARS) preferred
• Advanced Nursing skills required for caring for Perinatal/Neonatal/Paediatrics patients preferred
• Completion of the Baby Friendly 20 hour Breast Feeding education course preferred
• Maternal Newborn course preferred (required to complete within 1 year of hire)
• Ability to apply critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, and conflict resolution and prioritization skills to nursing duties required
• 1-3 years recent experience in maternal infant child care preferred
• Experience calculating and administering induction medications, management of epidurals and patient controlled analgesia, skills in labour and birth assessment and support preferred
• Experience calculating and administering micro dosages and skills in monitoring, establishing and maintaining intravenous infusions, umbilical catheterization, and gavage feeding for neonates and paediatric patients preferred
• Competence in the assessment and immediate and continuing care of mothers, newborns, paediatric patients and families including health teaching and education preferred
• Demonstrated understanding, commitment and practice of family-centered care required
• Basic proficiency in the use of computers, Intellispace Perinatal, Meditech, RL6 required
• Cares for women, children and their families according to hospital and program policies and procedures, best practices, and family-centered principles
• Participates in unit/department and Hospital Quality Improvement initiatives
• Completes continuing education requirements as necessary
• Acts as a coach, mentor, resource and positive role model for new staff and students
• Other related duties as assigned
